Michael Phelps:
          Full name; Michael Fred Phelps
          Born June 30, 1985.

          Phelps grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He first swam at "North Baltimore Aquatic Club". He has 2 sisters, Whitney and Hilary (they both swim). Whitney came close to qualifying for the US national 1996 summer olympic team but wasn't able to swim because of an injury.
          Phelps started swimming at the age of 7, partly becasue of the influence from his sisters. By the age of 10 he held a record for his age group. More records followed. Then just at the age of 15 Phelps qualified for the 2000 summer olympics.
          Phelps has won a total of 14 olympic gold medals. He is often refered to as the greatest swimmer and one of the greatest olympians of all times! Phelps holds the record for the most gold medals won in a single olympics. He beat Mark Spitz who had won 7 gold medals in the 1972, Munich olympics. Phelps got this record during the 2008 Beijing summer olympics.~ Michael after wining the 8 gold medals in 2008. Phelps was named world swimmer of the year in 
2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. He was named American swimmer of the year in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.



Mark Spitz

          Full name; Mark Andrew Spits          
          Born February 10, 1950.               

          Mark was the oldest of 3 children. At the age of 2 mark and his family moved o Hawaii where he swam EVERY day at the Waikiki beach. At the age of 6 his family moved back to Sacramento, California where he started competing at his local swim club. At the age of 9 he was training at "Arden Hill Swim Club" in Sacramento with Sherm Chavoor who trained him and 6 other olympic medalists. Before he was 10 years old he already held 17 national age group records. At the age of 14 Mark and his family moves to Santa Clara, California so that he could train with olympic coach George F. Haines at the "Santa Clara Swim Club". Mark trained with Haines from 1964 to 1968. During these four years Mark held the high schol record for every stroke in every distance!   
          Mark is a retired American olympic swimmer. He won 7 gold olympic medals in the 1972 Munich olympics. This record was beaten in 2008 by Michael Phelps. Between 1968 and 1972 Mark set 33 world records! Between 1968 and 1972 he also won 9 olympic gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze olympic medal. He was named world swimmer of the year in 1969, 1971 and 1972.

Eric Shanteau

Eric Shanteau:
          Full name; Eric Lee Shanteau
          Born October 1, 1983.


          Eric just missed the 2004 olympics and was determined to get in the 2008 olympics which he did. A week before Eric's 200m breaststroke race at the 2008 olympics he was informed that he had cancer. He decided to race regardless, even though he did not get a medal he still got a personal best. When he returned to the US he had to get surgery. 


Amanda Beard

          Full name; Amanda Ray Beard
          Born October 29, 1981.

          Just at the age of 14 Amanda made her first appearance to the 1996 Atlanta olympics. Amanda was the second youngest olympic medalist in American swimming history when she won 3 medals in Atlanta (1996). In Atlanta (1996) Amanda won 1 gold and 2 silver medals. Amanda has gone to every summer olympics since 1996. Amanda has won a total of 7 olympic medals. She excells at breaststroke! She held the #1 world ranking for 200m breaststroke in 2003. Amanda's main events are the 200 & 100m breaststroke, the 200m IM and the 4x100m medley relay.


Kim Vandenberg

Kim Vandenberg:
          Full name; Kimberly Vandenberg
          Born December 13, 1983.


          Kim was part of the US team that won bronze in the 2008 Olympics for 4x200m Freestyle relay. Kim is best at freestyle ant butterfly. Kim was born in Berkeley, California and currently lives in France.


Megan Jendrick

          Born January 15, 1984.        
     
          Megan won 2 gold medals at the 2000 Olympics and a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics. Megan went to the 2000 olympics and the 2008 olympics but was about 11 one-hundreths of a second to slow for the 2004 olympics. Megan has set 27 American records and 1 World Record in her career.  Megan was the second person EVER to swim 100-yards breaststroke in under 1:00, she is also 1 of 5 women in HISTORY to swim 100-yard breaststroke in under 59 seconds!


Natalie Caughlin

          Natalie was born and grew up in Vallejo, California.
